Entrepreneurship Teaching

Entrepreneurship encompasses proactive, risk-seeking and innovative behavior. Students learn how to create, explore and exploit entrepreneurial opportunities, how to structure and evaluate these opportunities and get an understanding about the particularities of founding, operating and growing an entrepreneurial firm. Our teaching is devoted to support entrepreneurial decision-making and to develop students’ entrepreneurial capabilities. In such, our students learn how to scan and plan entrepreneurial activities, how to develop effective business models, how to move from an idea to an entrepreneurial firm, and how to manage and grow their business.

Bachelor students get a first understanding of business administration and the processes and functions within firms in the “Introduction in Business and Management” class. This course provides students with the foundations to pursue entrepreneurial and managerial activities. Furthermore, we offer an entrepreneurship seminar for Bachelor students.

In the program for Master students, we emphasize the development of fundamental entrepreneurial capabilities and knowledge. In the “Principles of Entrepreneurship” course, students learn how to create innovative ideas and how to move from such an idea to an entrepreneurial firm. Moreover, students become acquainted with the basic principles of analyzing business opportunities and with the basics for writing a business plan. This course is complemented by interactive tasks, teaching students about innovation, factor markets and competition. In the “Business Planning” course, we advance students’ knowledge about the importance and specifics of a business plan. In this course, students start to develop an own idea and, based on that, craft their own business plan which is presented at the end of the class. In the “Business Developing” course, students get the opportunity to try themselves as managers of an own company. Students have to decide about the product portfolio, plan marketing campaigns, acquire funding, manage human resources and make decisions about the strategic positioning of the firm. Additionally, we offer an "Entrepreneurial Internship", where students gain insights into the daily business of an entrepreneur. 

The seminars we offer for Master students are devided in a "Research Track" in the winter term and a "Practice Track" in the summer term. In the "Practice Track" seminar, we do not simulate the creation and governance of an entrepreneurial firm, but students have to unfold actual entrepreneurial activities (on a very low scale) and accept the challenge to create value out of (virtually) nothing. In the "Reasearch Track" seminar students learn how to formulate evidence-based judgements based on empirical literature or empirical studies.
